Harvey has been working in the Antarctic with the Norwegian Polar Institute contributing to safe glacier travel and setting up fuel depots on the Antarctic plataeu.

The Norwegian Polar Institute must resupply their Antarctic Research Station, Troll by land covering a distance of 280km over glacial terrain. Cargo, food, and fuel have to be driven from the coast using belted vehicles and sledges. Parts of the route are heavily crevassed and a safe route has to be maintained before each transport season.

This involves using Ground Penetrating Radar to map crevasses that provide a potential threat to material and person injury, followed by physical inspection of the crevasses by mountaineers. We open up the snow bridges where they are thinnest and then abseil down into the crevasse to visually inspect the snow bridge from below for areas of weakness before deciding on the best crossing point for the vehicles. If necessary the snow bridge is destroyed using a piste groomer and then filled in by dozing tonnes of snow into the crevasse to make a safe crossing point.
